Armin van Buuren, Don Diablo and Fedde le Grand made up the group of final nominees in the category ‘Most Popular Dutch DJ’ February 19, at the annual ‘Oscars of the Dutch Dance Industry’, the GKA Awards. The GKA Awards is the longest running and only remaining awardshow for the Dutch dance industry. Who was going to be DJ Tiësto’s successor was the big question at this year’s awardshow. In a public vote, Don Diablo got the vast majority of the votes and received the award for ‘Holland’s Most Popular DJ’.
The 26-year old enfant terrible of the Dutch music industry was excluded in advance from the category ‘Most Sexy DJ’, an award that he won in both 2005 and 2006. Don Diablo was surprised, but happy with the award for ‘Holland’s Most Popular DJ’, which he sees as sign of appreciation for his contribution to the Dutch dance music scene this past year.
“2006 has been a very successful year for me with a lot of musical highs. However, these achievements definitely did not come overnight. I’ve invested a lot of time and energy in my music and therefore, this award is extra special to me.â€
Don Diablo was also nominated as ‘Best Dressed DJ’, but failed to take that award home. His comment: “I guess next year I will have to get a stylist!â€
